I'm running RDO Havana on Fedora 19, when trying to connect to Horizon
I get:
Something went wrong!
An unexpected error has occurred. Try refreshing the page. If that
doesn't help, contact your local administrator.
There's nothing in either the apache error log or in the horizon log
(which suggests we need to improve logging...but that's a separate
issue).
If I set DEBUG=True in /etc/openstack-dashboard/local_settings,
suddenly horizon starts working.
I'd appreciate any debugging ideas.

I had just run into this. Setting "ALLOWED_HOSTS = ['*']" in
/etc/openstack-dashboard/local_settings and restarting httpd seems to
have resolved it.
Have you filed or found a BZ for this?

Just for reference, I'd strictly avoid setting
ALLOWED_HOSTS=['*'] on a production system. Allowed hosts is a security
setting.
It's basically the same advice as not to disable SELinux or not to chmod
777 any dirs to be writable for the web server.

I understand, although I wonder (and I see from the discussion that
I'm not the only one) if we have the necessary information available
during the packstack run to set this variable sanely.
It sounds like Julie's fix for the logging is probably the more
important fix here, since this will make the problem more obvious if
ALLOWED_HOSTS is either not set or set to an incorrect value.

The two issues need to be fixed, and just fixing one will not solve the
other.
Getting real logging will support you in finding and debugging issues.
Securing your dashboard host is a totally different story.

As you discovered this was due to ALLOWED_HOSTS not being set. Both this
and the logging issue should get fixed with this patch [0] proposed to
packstack, which includes the latest updates to the local settings recently
merged in puppet-horizon.
In the meantime to get useful logs, you can update the LOGGING dictionary to
match the one suggested upstream [1] (the 'django' logger missing + logging
levels not being set was the issue).
