We could reply and discuss the message on list, but it just means that
in order to update the thread on forum, it would require manually doing so.

But that might not be a bad mode of operation anyhow...

* forum post question
* email sent to rdo-list
* some discussion and back/forth on list
* resolution/answer posted to the forum (maybe with a link to the
  discussion details in rdo-list archives)
